Bone health

Each year, 9,000 adult Norwegians break their hips and 15,000 break their wrists. A large number also have vertebral fractures. Norway has the world's highest number of osteoporosis cases in women, which costs hospitals 2 billion Norwegian kroner per year. NIFES is researching the importance of seafood consumption for bone health.

Replacement of calcium in our bones happens throughout life. When more calcium is removed than is added, our skeletons become weaker and we develop osteoporosis and become more prone to fractures.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that leads to changes in the structure of bone tissue and reduced bone mass. People with incipient osteoporosis are advised to take calcium and vitamin D supplements. Seafood is a good source of vitamin D, vitamin K and calcium. NIFES examines how vitamin D and K in fish with omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the breakdown of bone, thereby reducing osteoporosis in adult women.
